Brentford have reportedly made a second bid for Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson, with Newcastle United also expected to make an offer for the winger this week.

According to the Independent, the Bees have upped their previous offer for the Championship star with Thomas Frank’s side eager to sign the Welsh international. As per the report, Forest are looking for £20m for Johnson if the youngster is to depart this month.

Brentford aren’t the only club interested in Johnson, though. The Daily Mail report that Everton and West Ham are keen on the British talent, with Newcastle and Tottenham also keeping tabs on the Championship winger.

Lauded as a ‘livewire’ by Wales Online, Johnson has lit up the English second-tier this campaign, with the youngster bagging six goals in 28 Championship appearances so far and becoming a key player for Steve Cooper’s Forest side.

Johnson won plaudits for his display against Arsenal in the FA Cup earlier in the month, and now, Brentford and Newcastle look set to go toe-to-toe for the Championship superstar.

Whilst the Toon have the finances to pull off such a deal, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Johnson decides to join Brentford over Newcastle given the club’s reputuation of devleoping players from the EFL.

Johnson could thrive at Brentford despite Newcastle project

There’s no doubt that Newcastle are a bigger club in the Premier League than Brentford. However, the Bees’ incredible track record of improving homegrown talent could give them the edge over Eddie Howe’s side.

For Johnson, this could be an alluring prospect with Brentford. Moreover, given Newcastle’s position in the Premier League, a move to west London could be more stable than potentially returning down to the Championship with the Magpies.
