Newcastle United may have another shot at signing Diego Laxalt.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United will be offered another chance to sign AC Milan misfit Diego Laxalt when the summer transfer window opens.
Laxalt, 26, impressed for Uruguay at last summer’s World Cup, and subsequently earned a move away from Genoa, joining AC Milan on a four-year contract.
A speedy, hard-working player who can feature at left back, left wing back or on the left of midfield, Laxalt had been a regular in Serie A for Genoa, but his time at the San Siro has been frustrating so far.
Laxalt has started just six Serie A games for Milan this season, and The Chronicle now report that Milan will offer Newcastle another chance to sign Laxalt at the end of the campaign.
It’s stated that Rafael Benitez wanted to bring in Laxalt during the January transfer window, but the deal collapsed due to Milan’s asking price, meaning Newcastle signed Antonio Barreca instead.
Barreca won’t be signed permanently having played just a matter of minutes for Newcastle, and Benitez may well be tempted to go back in for Laxalt as a replacement.
Benitez has switched to a 3-4-2-1 system in 2019, and Laxalt would be ideal as the left wing back in that system, especially with questions over Matt Ritchie’s future at St James’ Park.
