Steve Bruce is pushing for Newcastle United to go and sign Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury before the transfer deadline.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Bruce is desperate to finally add Choudhury having missed out in January.
Bruce thinks Choudhury can bring ‘industry and combative nature’ to the Newcastle midfield, and Choudhury is open to leaving Leicester for more playing time elsewhere.
However, Newcastle’s hierarchy aren’t willing to jump into a deal and want Bruce to sell before landing Choudhury on loan.
Newcastle just splashed £25million on Joe Willock from Arsenal, so Bruce needs to offload the likes of Jeff Hendrick and Fabian Schar to raise funds.
Choudhury keeps dropping down the Leicester pecking order, and with two years left on his deal, the Foxes may be open to a permanent move.
The 23-year-old actually had something of a spat with Bruce in 2019.
Choudhury produced a bad foul on Matt Ritchie, leading to Bruce telling him to be careful as, whilst he’s a ‘very good player’, he could get a reputation with his fouling.
Choudhury snapped back by suggesting that Bruce had forgotten how he played football, with Bruce claiming he never went over the top of the ball as Choudhury did.
It therefore feels somewhat surprising that Bruce is so desperate to sign Choudhury, but maybe he has seen something he feels he can develop in the midfielder’s game.
