Newcastle United want Mohammed Salisu and Southampton are seemingly questioning the defender’s commitment.

The Saints are losing their fight against relegation right now, sitting bottom of the Premier League table.

Now four points adrift of safety, Southampton appear to be heading for the Championship.

Defender Salisu hasn’t featured since the 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

Salisu wasn’t even on the bench for games against West Ham United and Manchester City.

The Athletic now claim that Salisu is being left out because of questions over his commitment.

It’s noted that Salisu did have an injury but has been back in training and still isn’t being picked.

Salisu is out of contract in 2024 and his desire to wait until the summer to discuss a new deal seemingly has Southampton questioning his commitment to the cause.

Newcastle United want Mohammed Salisu

Salisu may well be on the move this summer as Southampton look to prevent him leaving for nothing in 2024.

The Ghanaian defender is already attracting interest with Newcastle United.

The Mirror reported in March that Newcastle are looking to sign Salisu at the end of the season.

It’s claimed that Eddie Howe is a big fan of Salisu and wanted to sign him in January of last term.

Newcastle may now sense an opportunity to sign Salisu this summer as Southampton face up to selling the defender.

The Magpies already have a quality left-sided defender in Sven Botman but may look to add another option in Salisu.

The Sun even claimed in March that Salisu could move on for just £15million this summer.

That’s a major cut on the £40million Newcastle were allegedly quoted in January 2022, according to 90Min.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Saints boss Ruben Selles, Salisu has bags of potential and the door could be open for Newcastle to finally get their man.
