Report: Newcastle take Yannick Toure on trial

Newcastle United were linked with Yannick Toure in January, and are now reportedly eyeing a move for the striker ahead of the summer.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle are stepping up their interest in Yannick Toure having handed the 17-year-old striker a trial at St James’ Park.

Toure appears to be destined for a very bright future in the game. The teenager currently plays for Young Boys’ under-21 side, where he has enjoyed a tremendous spell, scoring six goals in just seven games.

The Chronicle reports that he is out of contract in the summer and the Magpies have taken him on trial as they prepare for a major overhaul of their under-23 ranks which has seen just two players offered new contracts.

While the Chronicle adds that Young Boys will be due compensation, it appears to be something of a no-brainer deal for Newcastle to consider. The Daily Mail reported in January that the likes of Arsenal and Juventus were also targeting Toure, so that should say a lot about his potential.

Newcastle cannot afford to rest on their laurels in the Premier League. They could end the campaign in the top-half of the table – which would be an incredible achievement – but must not be under illusions regarding how much work is ahead of them if they want to ensure that they do not follow the likes of West Brom, Stoke and probably Swansea by getting relegated after previously looking like an established top flight side.

Bringing quality youngsters through the system may not capture the imagination if just as much attention is not given to strengthening the first-team, but it may be a very good way for the Magpies to potentially compete with clubs willing to spend significantly greater sums in the market. And the Toure deal – if he ends up joining – appears to have the potential to be a fantastically shrewd piece of business.
