90Min claim Newcastle have placed a £10million loan bid to sign Jesse Lingard in the last days of the January window. The report say that while talks have lasted the whole month, they ‘expect’ this offer to be ‘accepted’.

Lingard, 29, has started just two of his 14 league and cup appearances this season. That is, after sparkling on loan at West Ham last season – in which he scored nine and created five in 16 games. He is out of contract in June.

Newcastle have been strongly linked with Lingard – as have the likes of West Ham and Tottenham. But the report claims that after extensive talks, Newcastle have offered United a loan fee of £10million for Lingard.

Of course, such a deal would probably end his United spell – unless he signs a new Old Trafford contract. It is unclear whether Lingard wants the move, but it is claimed Newcastle would have to double his current wages.

Newcastle make Lingard bid: £10m loan seems expensive, but clever

While £10million for a loan sounds ridiculous, Lingard could end up being a permanent signing for nothing – making him a bargain signing in the long-term process. But plenty needs to happen for a move to go through.

Lingard still has to be convinced. Newcastle won on the weekend and that victory is hugely important in terms of staying up – but also trying to attract players this month. It gives those being targeted a bit more hope of survival.

Lingard has the quality to dramatically improve Newcastle’s chances of remaining in the Premier League. If he does join on loan, Newcastle have six months to convince a permanent deal – and it might just work out.
