According to Marca, Newcastle have made a second bid for Sevilla defender Diego Carlos as Eddie Howe aims to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, Marca believe Newcastle have made an offer of €25m (£21m) for the Brazilian, although Sevilla have rejected the bid.

It is said that Newcastle are prepared to pay up to €45m (£38m) to sign the 28-year-old, although that still might not be enough.

Marca are claiming that Sevilla have no interest in selling their No.20 given the lack of available replacements in January.

However, they could be willing to do business in the summer, when the market opens up a bit and it becomes easier to sign replacements.

So far this season, Carlos has made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.

He now seems to be Newcastle’s No.1 target in regards to defensive reinforcements, after a move for Lille’s Sven Botman hit the rocks.

The South American is arguably Sevilla’s best defender, so it’s no surprise to see them standing firm amid interest from Amanda Staveley and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF).

Newcastle could still sign Diego Carlos in January

Despite Sevilla’s stance, Newcastle still have a chance of bringing the 6-cap Brazil international to St James’ Park this month.

Just like Chris Wood, Carlos has a release clause in his contract.

Marca believe the Newcastle target has an €80m (£67m) agreement in his contract which means he can leave if that sum is met.

If the Magpies offer that amount, then they wouldn’t need to do any negotiating with Sevilla, only Carlos himself.

That fact is made all the more interesting by The Telegraph, as they believe Carlos wants to join Newcastle.

Therefore, it seems as if Howe will get his man, so long as Newcastle trigger his release clause – keep an eye on this saga, as it’s developing quickly.
