According to Sky Sports, Newcastle have submitted an offer to Atlético Madrid for Kieran Trippier, as Eddie Howe aims to secure Premier League survival.
What’s the story?
Well, it’s only New Year’s Day, but Newcastle have wasted no time whatsoever in making their first bid of the January transfer window.
Sky Sports believe talks between Newcastle and Atlético Madrid are ongoing, with the £77,000-a-week man interested in joining the Magpies according to The Athletic.
The England international is also said to be enthused by Newcastle’s offer.
Howe knows Trippier well. Back in January 2012, the 44-year-old signed the right-back for Burnley after he impressed on loan from Manchester City.
The Magpies boss even called Trippier “one of the best” he’s seen from dead-ball situations.
Last season, the 31-year-old helped Atlético Madrid win La Liga ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid, which earned him a place in La Liga’s Team of the Year.
Sky Sports do not disclose the amount offered by Newcastle.
Kieran Trippier would be a smart signing for Newcastle

In our view, this would be a tremendous way to kick off the January transfer window for Newcastle.
Howe has clearly realised that his right-back spot is fairly weak, and in Trippier, the Magpies would be signing a stellar solution.
Crucially, Howe adopts a system in which the full-backs get involved high up the pitch, so having someone with Trippier’s end product in the final third is key.

Furthermore, the former Tottenham defender is an ideal player to target for this current situation, as he knows the Premier League well and wouldn’t need much time to settle.
In total, the right-back has made 107 Premier League appearances.
Keep an eye on this situation, as it seems to be developing rapidly.
