According to Goal Spain, Newcastle have made another bid for Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos, although the signs are far from good.
What’s the story?
Well, Newcastle have pursued the 6-cap Brazil international for most of January, but they’re struggling to make progress.
Goal Spain believe Newcastle’s latest offer has been rejected by Sevilla, and the 28-year-old will only leave on their terms.
Despite numerous rejections, the report states that Eddie Howe will not give up his pursuit of Diego Carlos as he aims to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
Goal Spain add that Sevilla would also want to sign a replacement before letting the South American – whose passing ability has been likened to that of Virgil van Dijk – leave.
However, they doubt they’ll find a suitable alternative in the January transfer window, given the tricky nature of the winter market.
Interestingly, Sevilla do need to make a major sale before June 30th after spending beyond their means in the summer.
Having said that, there are no plans to offload Diego Carlos now, as Sevilla find themselves in a title race with Real Madrid.
Newcastle need to give up on Diego Carlos

Targeting Diego Carlos shows plenty of ambition from Newcastle, although at this moment in time, the Magpies have been overambitious.
Amanda Staveley needs to be realistic about who will join Newcastle at this stage, and clearly, Newcastle are barking up the wrong tree in Seville.
We’re over halfway through January, so it’s time for the Magpies to focus on a more realistic target before they find themselves panicking.

There are plenty of options out there, and the funds to sign them are effectively limitless for Newcastle, so there’s no point in submitting bid after bid for Diego Carlos.
If Newcastle stay in the Premier League this term, then by all means push for the Brazilian in the summer, when an exit looks more feasible.
Now, however, is not the time – Newcastle must move on.
