Report: Newcastle still interested in Luke Shaw

Newcastle United are reportedly still keen on Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw having made a move for the defender in January.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez remains interested in Manchester United defender Luke Shaw after failing to sign the 22-year-old during the January transfer window.

Shaw – signed for £27 million in 2014, according to BBC Sport – was the subject of a loan bid from the Magpies at the start of the year, but Jose Mourinho decided to keep him at Old Trafford. However, it now appears that his days with the club could be numbered.

The Chronicle reports that it is looking increasingly likely that Shaw will leave United at the end of the season, and Newcastle have seemingly been alerted by that fact.

Benitez is still an admirer of Shaw, according to the Chronicle, and there is a desire from the Spaniard to move Paul Dummett into centre-back in the near future, so he already knows how he would look to fit both men into his squad.

However, the Chronicle adds that Benitez’s priority for the summer is strengthening his attacking options and Shaw’s wages would see him become the highest earner at the club if he moved to St James’ Park on his current terms, so it appears that there may be some way to go before a deal looks likely.

Wise from Rafa to target Shaw?

Shaw appears to have lost his way during his time at Manchester United, but there are certainly regular glimpses of quality and flashes of brilliance that suggest that it is not too late for the former Southampton man to realise his potential.

Newcastle would seemingly have to part with a large chunk of their summer transfer budget if they hoped to get the youngster through the door this summer, but if Benitez can get the left-back back on track, it seems highly unlikely that he will regret the decision to make the move.
