According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle remain in talks with Sparta Prague regarding a potential deal for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Sky Sports reported on Monday that the Magpies had seen a loan bid for the 29-year-old rejected by the Czech side, and Newcastle fans may have assumed that that may be the end of any links with the stopper during this window.

The uncertainty surrounding the takeover situation at St James’ Park may leave some fans feeling that if they are unable to bring a player in on loan, further talks may be somewhat pointless for the time-being – but that may not actually be the situation in Dubravka’s case.

The Mail has since reported that Newcastle remain in talks with Sparta Prague about potential deal, with the latter insisting that they want a clause to be agreed which would see the Premier League side commit to making the loan deal permanent at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen how Rafa Benitez feels about the terms on the table, but given that his focus will surely be doing all he can to keep Newcastle in the top flight this season, he may be keen for the hierarchy to give the terms the green light.

The Magpies remain in a precarious position in the Premier League – they are now three points clear of the bottom three – so the boost of getting a new signing through the door may just help give the team some additional momentum that may prove crucial at a later stage.
