Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle may actually end up leaving the club on a free transfer, the Athletic report.
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce apparently encouraged the club’s board to offer Gayle a new deal, but they have been reticent to do so.
Gayle has just months remaining on his contract now, but rather than cash in on him, Newcastle are prepared to keep him around and let him leave on a free in the summer.
The Magpies apparently don’t want to leave themselves short up-front and they are concerned about letting Gayle leave now.
Newcastle are already heavily reliant on Callum Wilson for goals, and Gayle’s departure would only increase the pressure on him.

If Gayle does leave Newcastle then he is likely to command a far amount of interest, especially on a free transfer.
The clinical finisher possesses an excellent record in the Championship, and second tier clubs will surely be keen to take him in the summer, if his contract does expire.
