According to The Chronicle, there are fears behind the scenes at Newcastle United that owner Mike Ashley won’t back a £25million move for Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron.

Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to West Ham United brought an end to Newcastle’s three-game winning run, and highlighted that the Magpies still need some reinforcements in January.

Another playmaker is a must, as Ayoze Perez has been playing in the No. 10 role this term, but still doesn’t look entirely natural in that role behind Salomon Rondon, and was even booed by fans on Saturday.

Newcastle have now been looking to bring in another playmaker, and Atlanta United star Almiron has become Rafael Benitez’s top target after the player’s agent watched Newcastle beat Bournemouth last month.

Almiron would cost £25million, a Newcastle club record, and whilst the Magpies are fighting major English clubs for his signature, there are alleged fears behind the scenes.

It’s claimed that some staff at St James’ Park feel owner Mike Ashley won’t back a deal, which is the fear of many Newcastle fans given his lack of funding for transfers over the last 18 months, and they would then risk missing out to Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur or West Ham United.

With 13 goals and 13 assists in MLS this season, Almiron has become a star, and the Paraguayan international would be a huge signing for Newcastle – but it all seems to rest with Ashley and his decisions.
