Irish outlet RTE report that Newcastle are ‘set to sign’ Galway United teenager Alex Murphy this summer – beating a number of clubs to win the highly-rated star’s signature. He will join, when he turns 18 this summer.
Murphy, 17, has impressed for Galway already – breaking into the senior side and clocking up 19 first-team appearances, 12 last season and seven this time around. It is believed a move to Scotland or Italy was on the cards.
Brighton was also a consideration for Murphy – as was Torino or Celtic. But Newcastle have won the race to get left-back Murphy, who was even on standby for Ireland’s Under-21 squad in October – showing his progression.
The report states that Galway’s representatives were impressed with how talks went on Tyneside, and that has seen Murphy sign. He will officially join Newcastle in the summer when he turns 18 on June 25.
Murphy signing a good sign for Newcastle fans, board want future
Not only are Newcastle being linked with the likes of Neymar, Harry Kane and Ousmane Dembele – but they are also looking to build for the future. A good sign for the Toon’s supporters, who will want long-term growth.
Not just short-term success. The cash they have found themselves with after the takeover by the Saudi Arabia PIF-funded board was always expected to see big-money signings arrive – but Murphy is an example there is a project.
