According to L’Equipe, RB Leipzig’s Paul Mitchell is ‘close’ to joining Monaco amid links with being part of the potential Newcastle United project.
It’s claimed that Monaco are expected to finalise Mitchell’s arrival very soon, in what is a major coup for the Ligue 1 side.
Mitchell currently works as International Technical Director at Leipzig. He helped bring in the likes of Nordi Mukiele, Christopher Nkunku and Dani Olmo. He has also used the British market to bring in Emile Smith Rowe, Ademola Lookman and Ethan Ampadu.
It now seems that he is ready to trade in that job – with one of Europe’s most ambitious clubs – to become sporting director at Monaco.
Monaco axed Michael Emenalo as their sporting director in August 2019, and Mitchell would be brought into that role as his replacement.
The news could be a huge disappointment for Newcastle United. The Shields Gazette recently noted that Mitchell had been targeted as director of football at Newcastle in the event of a takeover.
However, the Saudi Arabian-led takeover of the Magpies has stalled of late, meaning a move for Mitchell hasn’t been possible.
That delay may mean Newcastle miss out on Mitchell completely, as the former Southampton and Tottenham talent spotter could instead join Monaco – leaving Newcastle’s potential owners to look elsewhere.
