According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United were keen to sign Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph this summer – but it’s claimed that they will miss out as Stoke City look set to win the race.

The Magpies were hoping to bring in a number of new faces ahead of their return to the Premier League, but have so far managed to secure only one deal.

Winger Christian Atsu has penned a permanent deal with Newcastle following a loan switch from Chelsea last term, but Rafael Benitez’s men may be about to miss on a top target.

Now, the Daily Mail report that Newcastle were hoping to lure Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph to St. James’ Park this summer, but they are set to lose out to Stoke City in the race for his signature.

Delph, 27, has found first-team football hard to come by with City since making a shock move from Manchester City in 2015, making just 39 appearances for the club as he struggled for playing time and fitness.

With Pep Guardiola re-tooling his squad this summer, Delph looks set to leave the Etihad Stadium – and Stoke City are allegedly set to beat Newcastle to his signature this summer.

The Potters are poised to let Giannelli Imbula leave the club, and England international Delph could replace him to form a midfield alongside Joe Allen and new signing Darren Fletcher.

Rafael Benitez is claimed to be growing frustrated with Newcastle’s lack of progress in the transfer market, and missing out on a proven Premier League midfielder in Delph could leave him concerned as the Magpies look for new faces.
