According to Greek news outlet Sportime, Newcastle United have joined the race to sign PAOK left back left back Dimitris Giannoulis.

It’s claimed that Marseille have wanted him for some time, whilst Watford are interested despite dropping into the Championship.

Newcastle are believed to be seriously considering Giannoulis, and PAOK would be seeking a fee of around €5million to €6million – around £4.5million to £5.4million.

The Magpies are in the market for a new left back this summer, with Danny Rose heading back to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of his loan stay.

Giannoulis, 24, has seven caps for Greece and impressed for PAOK last season, notching one goal and six assists in all competitions.

Liverpool have raided Greek football to sign left back Kostas Tsimikas this summer, and Newcastle may now attempt to follow suit with Giannoulis.

The two players have certain similarities, particularly in their speed and attacking ability, but Giannoulis comes at half the price of the Reds ace.

Tsimikas is stronger defensively and had more Champions League experience, but Newcastle may feel that Greek football has another fine left back that is worthy of a Premier League move.

That price tag will be appealing to Newcastle given their limited budget without a takeover, but they aren’t alone in pursuing the former Vataniakos man, meaning they may need to move quickly.
