The Chronicle understand that Newcastle United scouts are monitoring Rennes speed machine Jeremy Doku. Rated at £22million, Steve Nickson is looking to bring the ex-Anderlecht man to Tyneside in the summer.

Doku, 19, joined Rennes from Anderlecht in the summer of 2020 after he had a hand in 13 goals during 37 senior outings for the Belgian side. He is yet to add the end product to his game in France, with injuries an issue.

However, there are clear signs of potential and future magic – further strengthened by his performances at Euro 2020. He has already won 10 caps, and scored two goals for Belgium, under Roberto Martinez.

His talent has been eye-catching – even earning praise from Kevin De Bruyne, who branded him a “diamond in the rough” in 2020. It is believed ‘another spending spree’ is on the cards in the summer window.

Newcastle eye Doku: Toon need a winger to compliment front three

On one side, Newcastle have Allan Saint-Maximin. Down the middle, they have England star Callum Wilson and January recruit Chris Wood – and are likely to sign another striker in the upcoming window.

But on the right, they lack the big-name winger that will take them into the new era. Ryan Fraser is playing well, but hardly going to be the long-term answer. Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron are also options on the right.

Doku, at £22million, is a potential bargain. A player that already has 10 caps for Belgium, and almost 100 senior appearances to his name, is certainly deserving of the wonderkid title. Doku would be a wonderful signing.
