Newcastle United are eyeing some of the Football League’s brightest talents and scouted Accrington goalkeeper Toby Savin last week, as reported by The Sun.

Speaking back in November, after the 20-year-old shot-stopper pulled off a miraculous stop to deny Lincoln City a late winner at the Crown Ground, Stanley boss John Coleman admitted that Savin would not be playing third-tier football for long.

“Toby Savin has pulled off another unbelievable save at the end and it will be hard for us to keep hold of him,” the veteran gaffer told the Lancashire Telegraph.

At the time, Southampton were showing an interest in the 6ft 4ins youngster.

Four months on, it is Newcastle United who are being linked, with the Sun reporting that Magpies scout Mick Tait embarked on a scouting mission last week, running the rule over one of the most talented goalkeeping prospects outside of the Premier League.

Manchester United are also interested in the Merseyside-born starlet.

Savin has started 20 League One matches this season for an Accrington side who, despite an inconsistent run of form, are just three points adrift of Charlton Athletic in the fourth and final play-off spot.

It remains to be seen what sort of a role Savin, who has a contract until 2023, would play at St James’ Park.

Speaking to the Mail recently, Karl Darlow admitted that he would look to leave Newcastle if he lost his place to Martin Dubravka once the Slovakian returned from injury.

Given that exactly this is exactly what has happened – with Darlow dropped to the bench and seeing his England hopes go up in smoke – it would be no surprise if the former Nottingham Forest youngster had his heart set on a summer departure.
