Newcastle United are reportedly amongst a group of sides interested in signing Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter this summer.

Newcastle United are looking at trying to sign Bournemouth ace Harry Arter this summer, according to The Sun, but the Magpies face competition from Cardiff City, Middlesbrough and Stoke City for the Republic of Ireland international.

The 28-year-old has made more than 250 appearances for the Cherries in all competitions following his £4,000 move in 2010. However, he fell out of favour last season and played just 13 times in the Premier League.

And with Jefferson Lerma arriving for £25 million, Arter looks as though he could be on his way out of the Vitality Stadium in the final days of the transfer window.

The Sun reports that Rafa Benitez is keen on bringing the midfielder to St James’ Park, but Cardiff, Stoke and Middlesbrough are also considering pursuits. The report adds that Bournemouth will be looking for around £10 million before they sanction a deal.

Arter has been a tremendous servant for Bournemouth, so he could definitely prove to be a shrewd signing for any of the four clubs reportedly interested. However, he is perhaps not the kind of marquee addition that Newcastle fans will probably be hoping for at this stage of the window.

Unless something bizarre happens, Benitez is clearly not going to be able to break the bank before the deadline, so spending an eight-figure amount on strengthening an area of the squad which is probably not one of the main concerns for Newcastle seems to make little sense.
