Newcastle were keen on Destro in the summer, and have now reportedly re-entered the market for the Bologna striker.
Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that Newcastle United are rivalling Serie A side Sampdoria for Bologna striker Mattia Destro, after Rafa Benitez was reportedly interested back in the summer.
Back in February, TuttoMercatoWeb claimed that Newcastle and Watford were interested in landing the 27-year-old striker ahead of the summer transfer window, as he struggles to make an impact at Bologna.
Indeed, the report claimed Newcastle or Watford would have to spend a figure of around £9million to land their man, and it seems as though The Toon are still keen on landing the eight-time Italy international.
Destro boasts an impressive CV that has seen him score 29 goals in 68 games for AS Roma, as well as 25 in 93 for Bologna. In a league that sway more to the defensive side of the game, those stats are particularly impressive.
But this season, Destro is beginning to falter. He has managed just two Serie A starts for Bologna, and four substitute appearances. He has failed to score.
Newcastle are one of two teams interested in his services and bringing him back to his best, with Sampdoria also keen. They are looking to conduct a swap move, which would see Polish star Dawid Kownacki move the other way.
But a move to the Premier League and away from Italy could prove tantalising for Destro, who has spent his entire career in his home country with spells for AC Milan and Genoa. He has a contract until June 2020.
