Newcastle United have reportedly made a decision on Dwight Gayle’s future with West Bromwich Albion wanting to loan the striker.
According to a report from the Express and Star, Newcastle have told West Brom that they are not willing to loan Dwight Gayle out again this summer, leaving Slaven Bilic to consider other striker targets.
The Baggies go into the final hours of the window still short of options up front following Gayle’s return to his parent club and Jay Rodriguez’s move to Burnley earlier in the window.
The Express and Star reports that the Baggies had been hoping to loan Gayle for the coming campaign with an option to buy next summer being agreed as part of the deal. They reportedly cannot afford to target a permanent deal with the 29-year-old on £65,000-a-week.
However, Newcastle have reiterated to Bilic that Gayle is only available to buy this summer, and that has left the Croatian considering other potential targets, including Basel man Albian Ajeti.
The reports that Gayle will not be returning to the Hawthorns will not come as a big surprise to many of the West Brom fans, who refused to believe that there was fresh hope and were insistent that they would not buy into the rumours until he was unveiled.
It is still a blow however. If any Championship side is able to add Gayle to their ranks, their promotion hopes would immediately receive a major boost with 47 goals coming across his two previous campaigns in the second tier.
