Newcastle United had been approached by Giovanni van Bronckhorst about their vacant managerial position.
According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle have told Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s representatives that they are not interested in appointing the Dutchman as their next manager.
The Magpies are still searching for Rafa Benitez’s successor. Several names have been linked with the post, and the Chronicle reports that van Bronckhorst is one manager who is interested in returning to the Premier League 18 years after joining Arsenal as a player.
However, it appears that the 44-year-old is set to miss out on the St James’ Park post. The Chronicle suggests that Newcastle have told van Bronckhorst’s representatives that they ideally want a coach with Premier League experience who also boasts up to date knowledge of England’s top flight.
Van Bronckhorst has made a decent start to his managerial career, winning the Eredivisie during his four-year spell in charge of Feyenoord. He also won the KNVB Cup on two occasions.
It would have been a gamble to appoint the retired full-back. But perhaps it is interesting that Newcastle appear to have snubbed van Bronckhorst due to his experience.
Steven Gerrard has just finished his first year in management at Rangers. And while he had previously coached in Liverpool’s academy and is, of course, one of the greatest Premier League players of all-time, his managerial application does not seem to be significantly more impressive at this stage. Nevertheless, the Daily Mirror recently suggested that Newcastle had approached the Englishman about the role.
