90Min claim Newcastle are reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to complete the £30million signing of Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike. The French wonderkid has scored eight goals in 17 Ligue 1 outings this season.

Ekitike, 19, has only played 20 times at senior level for Reims, 19 of which have come this season. He spent the second half of last season on loan at top-tier Danish side Velje Boldklub, in which he scored three in 11.

But this season, he has become first choice at Reims – with his 6ft 3in frame allowing him to score on a regular basis. Even called-up to France’s Under-21 squad, Ekitike has laid on three assists too for Reims.

Little surprise that Newcastle have come calling. In fitting with the direction of the club’s new owners, they have targeted a player in Ekitike who is showing enormous potential – with massive resale value.

The report says Newcastle are now in ‘advanced talks’ to get a deal over the line for Ekitike. It is believed a deal will cost the Toon £30million, and are keen to get a deal over the line before this weekend’s clash against Watford.

Ekitike to Newcastle: Why a move is ideal for Eddie Howe and the Toon

The issue Newcastle have with bringing in a big-name striker is that one of their best players, in Callum Wilson, would be forced to sit on the bench when fit. It would be a waste to spend big, on a proven forward.

But a long-term replacement for Wilson, that is good enough to make an impact now – and happy to act as cover, makes more sense. With Ekitike, Newcastle are making an investment now, but also for the future.
