Newcastle United are back in for Brazilian left-back Rogerio after his impressive displays for Serie A high-flyers Sassuolo, according to Calciomercato.
One of the most long-suffering fan bases in British are kissing goodbye to their dreams of seeing Kalidou Koulibaly, Edinson Cavani and Adrien Rabiot shining on the hallowed St James’ turf.
But the lack of Saudi Arabian investment does not mean Newcastle cannot still make an inspired signing or two this summer.
The Magpies will have to lower their standards of course but, in place of marquee signings, the North East giants could instead make a smattering of astute, cut-price signings.
And Rogerio, a bucanneering and typically Brazilian full-back, might just be one of the best buys of the summer.
Newcastle have been interested since January 2019, according to the Mirror (28/01, page 79).

While they missed out last year, with Rogerio instead joining Sassuolo from Juventus in a £5 million deal after an impressive loan spell, the Tyneside giants are apparently back in for an exciting 22-year-old who could finally solve their long-standing left-back woes.
Calciomercato report that Newcastle have expressed their interest in the Brazil U20 prospect after he played a starring role in a 5-0 thrashing of relegation-threatened Genoa on Wednesday night.
A high-octane, free-wheeling Sassuolo side play some of the most attractive football in Serie A and, in Roberto di Zerbi, the club once coached by Max Allegri and Eusebio di Francesco have unearthed another highly-rated tactician – one admired by Pep Guardiola for his uber-intense approach.
It remains to be seen, though, how Rogerio would adapt to the more pragmatic approach favoured by Steve Bruce.
