Newcastle United were reportedly offered the chance to sign Daniel Sturridge, but the Magpies are not interested in a potential deal.

According to a report from The Northern Echo, Newcastle have rejected the chance to sign Daniel Sturridge after his representatives reached out to the Magpies about a potential summer deal.

Sturridge appears to be in a difficult moment in his career. Having struggled to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans at Liverpool, a loan move in January appeared to be ideal for the England international, and keeping West Brom in the Premier League would have certainly put him in the shop window for this summer.

Unfortunately however, the 28-year-old – who earns £130,000-a-week on Merseyside, according to Spotrac – endured a miserable time at The Hawthorns, spending most of the spell on the sidelines with injury and not scoring a single goal in any of his six appearances for the Baggies, who were, of course, relegated.

And it appears that Sturridge’s agent has had to try and engineer a move away this summer. The Northern Echo has reported that Newcastle were contacted about a potential deal, but Rafa Benitez has decided against opening talks having been snubbed by the striker before his move to West Brom in January.

It seems highly unlikely that the Newcastle supporters will be particularly disappointed that Benitez reportedly has no plans to open talks with Sturridge’s people.

He has managed to make more than 14 league appearances in a single season just four times during his career, and if Benitez is working with a tight budget this summer, gambling on Sturridge appears to make no sense at all – as West Brom found out after January.
