Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman was a man in demand this past summer, according to a report.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United rebuffed ‘more than half-a-dozen’ offers from other clubs to sign Freddie Woodman on loan this past summer.

The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting young goalkeepers at any Premier League side, and manager Rafael Benitez once called him the ‘future of Newcastle’.

But the youngster won’t be playing much senior football this season, having failed to make a match-day squad for any Magpies game – including the Carabao Cup.

The England Under-21 international impressed on loan with Aberdeen last season and another temporary move away from St James’s Park was expected this time around.

But Benitez obviously prefers to keep him in the North East, with The Chronicle reporting that the Spanish manager rejected more than six offers for Woodman during the off-season.

Woodman is contracted to United until 2020, but Newcastle want to tie him down to a new long-term deal, the report adds.

He made his senior debut in the 3-1 win over Luton Town in an FA Cup clash last January.
