According to Tutto Mercato Web, Newcastle are ready to submit a bid to bring Atlético Madrid defender Renan Lodi to the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, it seems Eddie Howe feels he needs a new left-back at St James’ Park, as he prepares to send an offer to Diego Simeone.

Tutto Mercato Web believe Juventus are also keen to sign Renan Lodi, but Newcastle are leading the race for his signature.

The Magpies are said to be preparing an offer in the region of €25m (£21m), which might not be enough to prise him away from the Wanda Metropolitano.

Previously, the Brazil international has been associated with a £33m price tag, so Newcastle might need to increase their bid.

Interestingly, Lodi is said to be friends with Bruno Guimaraes, which could play a big part in getting him to Tyneside.

In fact, Bruno could actually see two of his pals arrive in the Premier League, as Newcastle are also eyeing a move for Lucas Paqueta, who remains close to the Toon Army’s new hero.

Renan Lodi deal may spell the end of Matt Targett at Newcastle

In our view, if Howe is prepared to spend over £20m on a new left-back, it suggests he doesn’t intend to keep Matt Targett at St James’ Park.

Either that, or Steven Gerrard is planning to use the defender when he returns to Villa Park once his loan spell ends.

However, the Chronicle believe Newcastle have already agreed a fee with Aston Villa for Targett’s signature on a permanent basis.

Therefore, one possible outcome is that Howe has Lodi and Targett battling it out for the left-back spot.

However, Lodi would be giving up Champions League football with Atlético Madrid to join the Magpies, so surely he’d want to start week in, week out.

The situation is, evidently, a bit ambiguous.

Nevertheless, keep an eye on this saga, as it will surely become clearer soon.
