Newcastle United are said to be ready to smash their transfer record on Marc Andre Ter Stegen by El Nacional.
Newcastle are believed to be keen on the Barcelona goalkeeper, as they assess making an injection of quality to their first-team.
Ter Stegen to Newcastle?
The Magpies’ new financial might means that they can actually consider taking players off Barcelona now.
The Catalan club are badly struggling financially, and it seems that Newcastle are looking to take advantage by plucking one of their star men.
Newcastle’s current transfer record is the £39 million fee they spent on Joelinton, but the Tyneside club are believed to be willing to pay £47 million for Ter Stegen.
If he was to arrive the German could be a hugely impressive addition to Newcastle’s group.
However, there has to be question marks over whether signing a goalkeeper should be top of the Magpies’ list of priorities.
Newcastle already have Karl Darlow, Martin Dubravka and Freddie Woodman at the club, giving them a solid group of stoppers.
There is little doubting that Ter Stegen is an upgrade on any of their current options, but the Magpies surely have other areas of their team which need improvement more.

Eye-catching ambition
That being said, Ter Stegen may be being lined up as a statement signing and he is the sort of addition which would prove their ambition.
Ter Stegen has been regarded as one of the very best in his position for some time now.
Indeed, Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos said to Goal: “I like Ter Stegen a lot.
“Marc is one of the best in the world and without doubt he is the perfect keeper… for Barcelona.
“The best thing about Ter Stegen is that he makes very few mistakes. He’s perfect for Barca because he starts moves from the back and there aren’t many keepers who can do that.”
The comments highlight what a coup it would be for Newcastle if they could get hold of the 29-year-old.
And it will be interesting to see if the Magpies do push ahead with their apparent plan to sign him in January.
