Report: Newcastle ready to sell Adam Armstrong for £3m

Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong is attracting Championship interest, and the Magpies are reportedly ready to sell.

According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle have told Adam Armstrong that he can leave St James’ Park this summer provided any interested club offers the Magpies £3 million to sign him.

Armstrong has struggled to break into Rafa Benitez’s plans on Tyneside. He has played just two times for Newcastle over the last three seasons, spending most of his time out on loan.

A fantastic spell at Coventry City was followed by less inspired stints with Barnsley and Bolton Wanderers, but he would have been hoping that he sent a message to Benitez last season, as he helped Blackburn Rovers to promotion out of League One with nine goals in 21 games at Ewood Park.

However, The Sun reports that Newcastle are now ready to let him leave permanently as a number of Championship sides eye a potential move for the youngster – with £3 million said to be the amount that the Magpies are looking for.

It is perhaps a surprise that Benitez is ready to sell Armstrong. Though it seems unlikely that he would have been a regular contributor of goals in the Premier League next season, he does appear to have the potential to play at a high level, and Newcastle are not exactly blessed with a cluster of lethal strikers right now either.

And while £3 million may hand Benitez’s kitty a boost during this window, it is not the kind of boost that is going to be the catalyst to spark Newcastle’s summer spending – and perhaps Armstrong has shown enough during the early stages of his career to suggest that the seven-figure price could prove to be a bargain for any of the second tier sides pursuing a deal.
