According to a report from Spanish newspaper AS, Newcastle United are willing to meet Atletico Madrid’s demands to take Gelson Martins on loan.
The Magpies have endured yet another frustrating transfer window to date, as they have failed to bring in any new signings to bolster Rafael Benitez’s squad.
Much like last year’s arrivals of Martin Dubravka, Kenedy and Islam Slimani, it looks like Newcastle are gearing up for another late-window trolley dash.
Now, AS report that Newcastle want Atletico winger Gelson Martins on loan, and are willing to meet the demands to take him until the end of the season.
It’s claimed that Atletico want between €4million and €5million (£3.5million to £4.4million) for right-sided wide man Martins, and Newcastle are ready to pay it.
Martins, 23, was a hot property when he left Sporting over the summer, having racked up 13 goals and 13 assists for the Portuguese side last season.
However, the speedster has become the latest Atletico signing to quickly struggle under Diego Simeone, starting just one La Liga game so far this season.
The Spaniards are now willing to loan Martins out, and he would be a seriously exciting signing for the Magpies if Benitez can pull this one off.
Martins’ pace, dribbling ability and end product would transform Newcastle, and finally give Benitez a winger that teams will be truly afraid of, with Magpies fans no doubt praying that his rumour is true.
