Newcastle United are reportedly keen to step up their interest in Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, who is also on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar.
According to a report from The Sun, Newcastle are prepared to pay £15 million to try and see off competition from Spurs and Juventus for Dwight McNeil, but Burnley want twice as much for the winger.
McNeil has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League after a real breakout campaign at Turf Moor. He scored three goals and provided five assists for the Clarets last season, so it is unsurprising that he is attracting attention.
The Sun reports that Steve Bruce wants the 19-year-old as his first signing since taking the job at St James’ Park, and he is hoping to beat both Tottenham and Juventus to his signature.
However, The Sun adds that Newcastle want to offer £15 million for the teenager, which is unlikely to lead to an agreement with Burnley reportedly holding out for £30 million for their prized asset.
Could Newcastle get deal done?
It may appear to be a big gamble for Newcastle to meet Burnley’s asking price for McNeil. But the signs suggest that he is the kind of player who could be worth a lot more in the coming years.
He was excellent last term, and it is telling that European heavyweights such as Spurs and the Old Lady are monitoring his progress. But perhaps, much will come down to how much money Bruce has to spend this summer.
McNeil is a frightening prospect. But with Newcastle arguably needing to strengthen in a number of areas before the campaign begins, it may be too much of a risk for Bruce to sign the youngster if a deal would see the majority of his budget eaten up.
