Ivan Toney remains a Newcastle player, but is on loan at Scunthorpe United.
The Evening Chronicle have reported that Newcastle United are willing to “listen to offers” for striker Ivan Toney as the youngster becomes surplus to requirements at St. James’ Park.
The 21-year-old has made just four Newcastle appearances during his young career and has instead been sent on a whole host of loans with the Toon simply not needing the fleet-footed centre-forward.
Toney has turned out for the likes of Barnsley and Shrewsbury Town, before going on loan to Wigan for the first half of this season before seeing that move cancelled and rejoining Scunthorpe – with whom he spent last season.
The report states that Newcastle are considering who makes their retained list for the end of the season, and although Toney will not see his contract expire at the end of the season – Rafa Benitez’s side are willing to offload him.
The likes of Joselu, Islam Slimani and Dwight Gayle remain ahead of Toney in the pecking order while Adam Armstrong and Aleksander Mitrovic are still contracted to the club and are likely to be considered ahead of the young striker.
Recent Armstrong form proves nail in the coffin
Prior to going on loan last summer, Armstrong was considered slightly above Toney in the Newcastle reckoning. Armstrong managed just three goals in 23 games for Championship side Bolton, while Toney six in just 12 Wigan starts.
But Armstrong’s recent form has excited Toon fans as the pocket-sized speed machine shows once again his highly-rated potential, with four in five for Blackburn after making the switch in January.
Armstrong’s form may have just made the decision in Benitez’s mind.
