According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are plotting a summer transfer move for James Maddison.

The Magpies have been linked with Maddison for some time – they had two bids rejected for him last summer, and now, they’re, once again, keen on bringing him in.

Leicester City are likely to demand a high fee for the ‘incredible’ midfielder, given his quality and the 18 months remaining on his contract.

However, with Newcastle’s status as the richest club on the planet they have the resources to make a move for the 26-year-old.

Maddison has been in impressive form for Leicester this season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists in the Premier League. His form also earned him a place in England’s World Cup squad, but he didn’t play a single minute in Qatar.

Maddison is certainly a player capable of playing at the highest level, and with Newcastle currently occupying one of the top four spots in the Premier League, one has to imagine that he’d be at least a bit tempted by a move to St James’ Park. After all, Newcastle are only headed in one direction right now – up.

Signing James Maddison would be a statement of intent, and would show the rest of the league that Newcastle are truly serious about challenging for major honours from this point forward as they continue to court the best young, English talent in the country.

It remains to be seen whether Leicester will be willing to let Maddison leave, but with the Foxes in need of a rebuild and Newcastle’s persistence here, it wouldn’t be surprising at all If the ex-Norwich City man did end up playing in black and white next season.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on as we head into the summer transfer window.
