According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle opened discussions with Independiente del Valle over the signing of Moises Caicedo.

However, the Daily Mail believe he’s heading to Brighton in a deal worth £4.5 million.

The Ecuador international’s name has been in the spotlight recently, as Manchester United and Chelsea also pursued his signature.

That is mentioned in the Daily Mail‘s report, as is West Ham and Everton’s interest – news of Newcastle being interested is, however, fresh information.

It’s no surprise that the Magpies wanted to get involved in the hunt.

Caicedo – who is just 19 – looks a real prospect, and one who South American football expert Tim Vickery rates highly.

Vickery told talkSPORT that the teenager has more strings to his bow than his idol, N’Golo Kante, before saying that whoever gets the defensive midfielder will be making a ‘wonderful’ signing.

He said: ‘A year ago, he was talking about Kante of Chelsea being his role model and he is already more than that.

‘In say, a 4-2-3-1, he is like that second man in that line of two so he can defend, but he can also bomb forward. He’s timing his runs very well, he’s cool in possession and he seems to have the whole lot. I think he is a wonderful, wonderful signing.’

After Caicedo makes his expected move to Brighton, the Daily Mail say he will be loaned to Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise.

However, his move to the Seagulls has not yet been confirmed, so who knows if any of the other interested clubs could pip Brighton to his services.

Presumably, most clubs would love to have the next Kante, so Newcastle should keep pushing until the last possible moment, in our view.
