Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for Achraaf Lazaar.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Palermo’s Achraaf Lazaar will soon be joining Newcastle United.

The Italian report claims that the two clubs have been working hard to find an agreement with the defender set to join Rafa Benitez’s side as a deal edges ever closer.

Newcastle haven’t been shy in spending the cash this summer as they look to make an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last season.

Grant Hanley, Dwight Gayle and Isaac Hayden are just three of a number of signings made by the Magpies this summer yet Benitez still feels he can improve his squad ahead of the transfer deadline.

Lazaar is a Morocco international and is predominantly a left-back, though he is also capable of playing left wing.

Newcastle’s Paul Dummett currently holds the regular left-back spot at St. James’ Park, yet beyond him there isn’t much in terms of competition so there is certainly scope to bring in another player.

Lazaar, 24, joined Palermo in 2014 and has since become a regular fixture in their starting XI, making over 70 appearances for the Sicily-based club.

Newcastle lost their opening two Championship fixtures, but back-to-back league wins over Reading and Bristol City have raised spirits on Tyneside with many tipping the club to win the league.
