Newcastle were reportedly offered Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel last month.

Turkish outlet A Spor have claimed on their official website that Newcastle United officials will jet out to Turkey this week to meet with Fenerbahce over a potential deal for experienced defender Martin Skrtel.
The Toon were reportedly offered the 33-year-old last month, after Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were priced out of a move due to the ex-Liverpool star’s hefty wages with the Turkish giants. The Daily Record claims he earns £60,000 a week.

Rafa Benitez signed Slovakia international Skrtel during his time as Liverpool manager, and he could look to form a reunion with the combative powerhouse at Newcastle.
It is believed that Benitez is keen for Skrtel to move to St. James’ Park, despite the presence of Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune, Ciaran Clark and Chancel Mbemba – though the latter is surplus to requirements and could leave this summer.

The report claims officials have been sent to Turkey in an attempt to thrash out a deal that will see Skrtel move to Newcastle, but his wages will be considered a concern for Benitez who has little manoeuvrability when it comes to cash.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle will conclude a deal, but with Benitez keen to land Skrtel and Fener seemingly desperate to get rid of a player that struggled last season, a move could certainly be on the cards.
