Newcastle United are reportedly set to launch a second attempt to sign FC Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, who the Toon were eager to bring in the January window.
According to Sport, the Magpies have not dropper their ‘obsession’ of signing the 26-year-old centre-back, who is highly expected to leave Barcelona at the end of this season, who has played just 51 minutes of football in 2022.
As per the report, Newcastle are big fans of Lenglet, who Barcelona signed in 2018 after activating his €35m (£29m) release clause from Sevilla, yet despite a high reputation, the 26-year-old has been regarded as one of the club’s worst signings in recent years.
With a contract that lasts until 2026, Barcelona are tied down to the defender for some time, yet Newcastle could prove to be a saving grace for the Catalan giants, who seem eager to take Lenglet off their hands in the summer.
Eddie Howe’s side were interested in Lenglet in January, with Jeunes Footeux reporting that Newcastle had made a loan-to-buy offer for the French centre-back, however, Barcelona rejected this proposal from the Premier League side.
Indeed, as we head into the summer and Lenglet remains far from Xavi Hernandez’s plans at Barcelona, the club could be open to selling the defender to Newcastle if a new offer was to be made for the former Nancy star.
Newcastle can do much better than Barcelona flop Lenglet

Ask most Barcelona supporters about Newcastle’s ‘obsession’ to sign Lenglet, and they will likely tell you that the Magpies and Howe are crazy to be so interested in the French centre-back.
Lenglet has been seen as one of the many symbols for Barcelona’s decline over the years, and with Newcastle seemingly very keen on signing the defender, Howe and the club’s transfer committee must surely be looking at other options in a position that needs to be upgraded this summer.
