According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are now working on a deal to bring Lloyd Kelly to St James’ Park from Bournemouth.
The defender has been linked to Newcastle in recent weeks, and now the Magpies are actively working on bringing him to Tyneside.
Kelly is an interesting player. He’s been shining in the Championship for the past two years, but in his only Premier League season he did suffer relegation with Bournemouth.
Of course, Kelly is a player Eddie Howe knows well, he brought him to Bournemouth back in 2019, and he’s even called him ‘outstanding’ in the past.
A defensive revamp does appear to be Newcastle’s top priority this January. They’ve been strongly linked with moves for James Tarkowski and Kieran Trippier, while Kelly also appears to be a top target.
It’s not all that surprising to see that Newcastle want defensive reinforcements. After all, they’re on track to concede 84 Premier League goals at this rate, and if they do reach that tally, it will be almost impossible for them to stay up.
Is Kelly what Newcastle need? Well, it’s hard to say. He’s a talented player, but he’s unproven at this level, and with the Magpies fighting for their Premier League lives, United may want a player with greater pedigree at the top-level.
