According to Tutto Mercato Web, Newcastle are now interested in bringing Galatasaray defender Marcão to the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, Newcastle have struggled to sign their main defensive targets in Sven Botman and Diego Carlos, so it’s time for plan B.

Tutto Mercato Web believe the Magpies have now added Marcão to their list of targets, and Galatasaray are willing to sell their No.45.

It is said that a sum of €15m (£12m) will be enough to sign the Brazilian defender.

For Newcastle – the richest club on the planet – that is mere pocket change, and an asking price they should easily be able to afford.

Marcão is a key player for the Turkish giants, having made 24 appearances in all competitions this season.

All of those outings have been at centre-back, although the South American is said to be able to operate in a defensive midfield role as well.

Marcão could bring trouble to Newcastle

You may remember that infamous clash between Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer at St James’ Park, in which the pair came to blows despite being teammates.

Interestingly, Marcão decided to reenact that incident himself earlier this season, in what was a bizarre moment.

The Brazilian confronted Kerem Akturkoglu during Galatasaray’s 2-0 win against Giresunspor back in August, throwing two punches at his teammate and also landing a headbutt.

It was a shocking moment, which saw Marcão sent off and handed an eight-game ban for his actions.

In a relegation battle, Eddie Howe needs to sign the right characters to pull Newcastle out from the depths of the Premier League.

We don’t want to define him by this one incident, although the evidence suggests Marcão would be a bad egg in the dressing room.

Keep an eye on this saga, as it would certainly be a controversial move if Newcastle brought Marcão to the Premier League.
