Newcastle are now keen to bring Joao Gomes to the Premier League – a player who has admitted he would love to join Liverpool.

What’s the story?

Well, after missing out on Andrey Santos to Chelsea, Eddie Howe is now targeting another Brazilian midfielder in Gomes – according to Rudy Galetti.

The respected journalist believes Newcastle are monitoring the Flamengo No.35 as they look to improve their midfield department.

It comes after SPORT in Spain revealed that Liverpool are also interested in Gomes.

The 21-year-old has made a name for himself in Brazil by helping Flamengo win a number of trophies, including the Copa Libertadores and the Série A title.

Gomes impressively earned a spot in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A Team of the Year for his efforts throughout 2022.

At the age of just 21, the South American maestro has already made 117 appearances for the Flamengo first-team, which speaks volumes about his ability as well as his professionalism.

Gomes is not exactly a goalscoring midfielder, however – he has only netted three goals in those 117 outings.

Newcastle may lose out to Liverpool

If Liverpool make their interest known to Flamengo and Gomes this month, we can certainly see them beating Newcastle to his signature – especially as Jürgen Klopp desperately needs new midfielders at Anfield.

As aforesaid, the Brazilian playmaker has already professed his love for Liverpool while speaking during an Instagram live chat, which led to Flamengo’s Vice President Marcos Braz issuing a statement claiming that Gomes is not pushing to leave.

If Liverpool or Newcastle truly do want to sign Gomes, it may cost them a fair bit.

SPORT add that the youngster has a release clause worth €60m (£52m) written into his contract, which Flamengo are likely to refer interested parties to.

Keep an eye on this situation, as Gomes could be on the move this winter.
