French newspaper L’Equipe claim that Newcastle have opened talks to sign RC Lens striker Igantius Ganago. The fleet-footed striker is currently at the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon, playing in a 4-1 win over Ethiopia.
Ganago, 22, has thrown himself onto the radar at Newcastle and other clubs after an eye-catching first half to the Ligue 1 campaign. Last season, he scored seven goals and laid on three assists in 24 top-tier games.
That is, despite starting only 16 and completing 90 minutes on four occasions. This season, that form has remained – scoring four in 14 games. But again, the £5million (Kick442) signing remains a bit-part player at Lens.
L’Equipe report that Ganago’s agents are in talks with Newcastle – but Lens are keen to keep their no.9. He is currently at AFCON with Cameroon. Newcastle have brought in Chris Wood, but still want another striker.
Ganago spoke of looking to idolise Mario Balotelli following his move to Lens, having played under the ex-Manchester City star during his time at Nice: “I liked [Mario] Balotelli a lot. I liked his character. He inspired me.”
Ganago to Newcastle: Lens star might be good, as third option
But he is some way off the standard of Callum Wilson and Chris Wood. However, it could be a smart move from the Toon given his versatility and speed – which allows him to play on either flank.
That pace would make him an exciting, and threatening option from the bench as Newcastle look to stay up. But if Newcastle expect Ganago to be the man to fire them to safety, then they really need to look elsewhere.
