According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United are now plotting a deal to re-sign Eintracht Frankfurt left back Jetro Willems this month.

It’s claimed that Willems wants to rejoin Newcastle, but it was unclear whether the Magpies actually wanted to bring him back.

Now though, it’s thought that Newcastle are considering a deal to sign Willems this month as Steve Bruce looks to add depth to his side.

Willems spent last season on loan at Newcastle, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in January 2020, bringing his spell on Tyneside to an end.

The Dutchman remains popular with Newcastle fans having both impressed on the pitch as an attacking threat, and been passionate for the club off the pitch even after his exit.

Willems has turned down a deal to stay with Frankfurt, and given that he is now inside the final six months of his contract, he can sign a pre-contract agreement elsewhere.

Frankfurt are willing to let him go on the cheap this month though, which is appealing to Steve Bruce given his limited transfer budget.

Newcastle were without Jamal Lewis due to injury today, and adding Willems would give Bruce another option at left back without breaking the bank – though there will understandably be some concern about his recovery from injury.
