Report: Newcastle move for West Brom’s Salomon Rondon unlikely

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon, but fear the cost of a potential move.

According to a report from the Shields Gazette, it is looking less likely that West Brom striker Salomon Rondon will be heading to Newcastle this summer as the Magpies are starting to become concerned about how much a potential move will cost.

Rondon seems likely to attract a fair amount of attention this summer, with the Shields Gazette reporting that the Venezuelan is available for £16.5 million following the Baggies’ relegation from the Premier League.

The Shields Gazette adds that Newcastle have been interested in taking him to St James’ Park, but now fear that they will end up spending significantly more than his release clause due to agent fees and wages – and thus, a deal is deemed to be unlikely at this stage.

For £16.5 million, there is certainly an argument that Rondon could have been a very good signing for Rafa Benitez’s side. He was often a popular player amongst the West Brom fans due to his work-rate and boasts a decent record in front of goal during his time at The Hawthorns.

But it is little surprise that the Magpies seem to be reluctant to spend significantly more on him. He is yet to reach double figures in his three seasons in the Premier League and is perhaps not at an age where he is likely to get significantly better.

If Benitez is working on a tight budget once again this summer, he may perhaps be able to find better value on the market – especially as a lot of the boxes that Rondon seems to tick are also ticked by the existing options within Newcastle’s squad.
