Newcastle United are ‘increasingly confident’ that Kieran Trippier will be at St. James’ Park by the end of January, the Northern Echo report.

Trippier to Newcastle?

They say that Newcastle are starting to believe that Trippier’s signing will come off – which would make an excellent start to their transfer deals under PIF.

There is no question that Trippier would provide an upgrade on their current right-back options.

The England International, who is currently at Atletico Madrid, is a very solid defender, but he also provides great service going forward due to his excellent crossing ability.

Newcastle are apparently willing to pay £30 million to sign the 29-year-old, and have put in a clause which means he can leave for a set fee if they go down.

Trippier’s proposed deal is set to be worth £150,000-a-week, which would break a record and make him the highest paid player in the club’s history.

Expensive signing

The financials of the deal mean it is a hugely expensive transfer, especially considering the age of Trippier.

Given he is almost 30, Newcastle almost certainly won’t receive much in the way of re-sale value for the full-back. who Gareth Southgate says has ‘outstanding quality’.

But he could improve Eddie Howe’s options significantly, and that injection of class is exactly what the Magpies need right now.

Newcastle are fighting to stay in the Premier League and if Trippier can help them out in that fight it is likely that the club will think it is money very well spent.
