According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United have been asking for information about Burnley striker Andre Gray ahead of a summer move for the player.
The Magpies are edging towards promotion back to the Premier League, as they currently sit one point clear at the top of the Championship table with just eight games to play.
Once Newcastle do return to the Premier League, they will be looking to strengthen their squad having stumbled on a number of occasions this term, with a striker possibly on Rafael Benitez’s wish list.
Dwight Gayle has been prolific with 21 league goals to his name, but his injury issues have left Benitez relying on Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy, with neither really being seen as Premier League-calibre strikers.
Now, The Chronicle report that Newcastle are keen to land Burnley striker Andre Gray, and have asked for background information from various sources to finalise their information on the player.
Gray, 25, hit 23 goals in 41 Championship games for Burnley last season to fire them to the title, and has found the net eight times in his first ever Premier League campaign this term.

The former Wolves youngster has emerged as a transfer target for a number of Premier League clubs given that his contract expires in just over a year, putting pressure on Burnley to sell the striker.
Newcastle are now hoping to push to the front of the queue, and having requested opinions on Gray from those who have worked with him previously, it seems that the Magpies are doing thorough background checks on the striker.
