According to Calciomercato, Newcastle have made a move for Matthias Ginter in a bid to beat Inter Milan to his signature.
What’s the story?
Well, the Italian news outlet believe Inter Milan have been evaluating the possibility of signing Ginter on a free transfer for weeks now.
The 46-cap Germany international becomes a free agent in June, but it seems Newcastle aren’t willing to wait that long.
Calciomercato believe the Magpies are planning a January swoop for the 27-year-old, in order to beat those waiting to sign him on a free transfer.
It is said that the approach was made sometime yesterday.
So far this season, Ginter has made 14 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Monchengladbach – he is a key man for Adi Hütter.
If the Bundesliga outfit lost their No.28 in the middle of the season, it would be a massive blow to them.
Who is Newcastle target Matthias Ginter?

As far as comparisons go, Ginter has been likened to one of the best centre-backs to have ever played the game.
According to the Bundesliga‘s official website, the German defender plays like Sergio Ramos.
It is said that he and Ginter are similar as they’re both dangerous from set-pieces, and are also both excellent on the ball.
The Bundesliga also mention the fact Ginter can play at right-back as a comparable trait to Ramos, who began his career in that position.

German legend Lothar Matthäus added further strength to this comparison when saying: “Ginter has become a leader at the back, in a similar way to Ramos at Real. He doesn’t just give instructions to his teammates, but leads them as well. That’s what Ginter is doing really well at the moment. He reminds me of Ramos.”
Clearly, Ginter is a quality player, who would help Eddie Howe out tremendously as Newcastle battle to stay in the Premier League.
