According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have made contact over a move for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Jetro Willems.
Of course, the 22-cap Netherlands international is already familiar to the Toon Army, having made 19 Premier League appearances while on loan last season.
The Dutchman was included in Eintracht Frankfurt’s squad over the weekend, but the Chronicle say that he sees his future away from the German side.
Willems turned down a contract from the Bundesliga outfit last year, and has set his sights on a return to Tyneside.
He promised to return to St James’ Park after his gruesome knee injury against Chelsea, and it sounds as if he intends to keep that promise.
PAOK approached the 26-year-old earlier this month. However, the left-back favours Newcastle and is holding out for the Magpies.
Furthermore, the Chronicle add that Willems remains close to Allan Saint-Maximin, who he played behind last term.
The former PSV Eindhoven defender is said to be match-fit and ready for action, having made a full recovery from his horrible knee injury.
Steve Bruce arguably doesn’t need another left-back with Jamal Lewis at St James’ Park, while Matt Ritchie can also play there.
However, the Chronicle mention interest in Ritchie from Bournemouth, so perhaps a move for Willems will become necessary if the Scot departs.
