According to Calciomercato, Newcastle have made a move for Alessio Romagnoli within the past few days, who is also a target for Tottenham.

What’s the story?

Well, the Italian news outlet believe Newcastle have been in touch with AC Milan in regards to their captain’s availability.

It comes after 90min revealed that Tottenham are preparing to offer Romagnoli a contract, with his deal at the San Siro expiring in June.

Calciomercato believe Lazio are currently the strongest candidate to sign the Italy international, who earns £106,000-a-week.

However, Newcastle – as well as Tottenham – have funds to blow Lazio out of the water in this race, so the Serie A side may not have a chance.

So far this season, Romagnoli has made 25 appearances in all competitions for AC Milan, as the Italian giants sit top of Serie A.

Newcastle must be wary of Tottenham

In our view, despite making the first move, Newcastle must be wary of the threat Tottenham pose in this transfer battle.

Spurs have a strong Italian presence right now with Antonio Conte and Director of Football Fabio Paratici, who has already tapped into his knowledge of the Serie A market.

Under Paratici, Tottenham have signed the likes of Cristian Romero, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, all of whom have impressed.

Paratici has strong connections in Italy, so despite Newcastle’s riches, they may lose out on Romagnoli simply due to a lack of contacts.

Having said that, be sure to keep an eye on this saga, as anything could happen between now and the summer.
