According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have decided to recall Matty Longstaff from his loan spell at Aberdeen.

What’s the story?

Well, Newcastle are not happy with the amount of action Longstaff is seeing over in Scotland, and they’re now set to recall him.

The 21-year-old has not played since November 20th, while he has also missed out on the last three matchday squads.

Thankfully, the Magpies have a clause in the agreement which means it can be terminated in January.

The Chronicle believe Longstaff’s representatives want that clause triggered as soon as possible, so their client can get his career back on track.

Now, the England Under-20 international is set to return to Little Benton, where Eddie Howe and his staff will monitor him in training.

Longstaff will then be kept at St James’ Park, or another loan will be found.

What should Newcastle do with Matty Longstaff?

In our view, Howe should keep the Newcastle Academy graduate on Tyneside for the remainder of the season.

Newcastle’s midfield depth is quite weak, and they don’t really have a player like Longstaff who can charge around and make life difficult for opponents in the middle of the park.

You have to remember how good Longstaff was on his Premier League debut against Manchester United, in which he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.

Had Steve Bruce not handled his development poorly, Longstaff could well have been a regular starter for Newcastle right now.

The talent is certainly there – Longstaff just has to ensure he grabs this opportunity in training with both hands.
